We are very pleased to announce that the monument wings have been laser etched with each of the 88 Marines who fell in combat while serving with Echo 2/7. The Marine Corps Emblem was also etched. The MC emblem will be mounted at the top of the monument.

The reality of the monument is coming forth. Just being there while the names were being etched in the granite was sobering. The engraving team that handled the job was very moved by the fact that so many Marines gave there lives for their freedom. It seemed like it was an honor for them to have the job.

The next step in the process is to erect the monument at the MC Museum, Semper Fi Park. This should be completed by mid May. After viewing the quality etchings, the monument committee can sleep better.

Semper Fi,
Monument Committee

CMC and SMMC Visit Marines and Sailors of 1/5

FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELARAM II, Nimroz province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan – General James F. In World War II, he was instrumental in developing amphibious vehicles, and masterminded the invasion of Okinawa. In Korea, he was a combat hero and pioneered the use of helicopters in warfare. In Vietnam, he devised a holistic strategy to fighting the Viet Cong, but when he stood up to LBJ, Krulak was forced to retire. Yet perhaps all of his accomplishments pale in comparison to what he did after World War II and again after Korea: Krulak almost single-handedly stopped the U.S. government from abolishing the Marine Corps. And all the while, he kept secret the truth that he feared would destroy him.

~Book by Robert Coram
Available at Amazon.com

Source: http://www.i-mef.usmc.mil/external/1stmardiv/

DODGERS TO CELEBRATE THE MILITARY IN 2011 WITH TICKET DISCOUNTS, VETERAN OF THE GAME AND ARMED FORCES THEME NIGHTS

MAY TICKET OFFER

All members of the joint services with a valid military ID, including active, reserve and retired veterans as well as their dependents, can show their military ID at any Dodger Stadium ticket booth day of game to receive two complimentary tickets courtesy of the Dodgers.

Each military ID will be good for two complimentary tickets.

MILITARY TICKET DISCOUNT PROGRAMS - SAVE UP TO 75%!*

Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and National Guard members with a valid military ID, active duty, reserve and retired, will now be able to purchase $110 Infield Box tickets on the Field Level for just $25 - a savings of more than 75%

In addition, military members will be able to save close to 70% on tickets throughout Dodger Stadium as follows:
Infield Box: $25 (savings of 75%)
Preferred Field Box: $20 (savings of 66%)
Left Field Pavilion: $10 (savings of 50%)
Top Deck: $7 (savings of 53%)

All armed forces spouses and dependants will be included in the Dodgers' Military discount program and will be able to purchase up to 8 tickets per game

* Tickets are available on the DAY OF GAME ONLY and are SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY. In January, LA Times writer Tony Perry reported that 3/5 pushed into areas that the British had not gone, where Taliban control was unchallenged, where opium crops used to fuel insurgency were grown, and bomb makers gathered to create explosives used in Sangin and neighboring Kandahar province.

3/5 experienced heavy casualties, especially in the beginning of the deployment as Taliban fighters repeatedly ambushed the Marines in hopes that they would retreat to their bases. This tactic may have proved effective with previous opponents, but 3/5 lived up to their motto: “Get Some” and actively engaged the Taliban in hundreds of offensive firefights while significantly expanded the security bubble outward from the Sangin district center. The Marines brought more troops, more artillery, more airstrikes, and more firepower to the region—giving the Taliban two choices: leave or fight and die.

Sangin, now dubbed “the Fallujah of Afghanistan,” has become a battleground in which Marines are fulfilling the battalion’s legacy earned at Belleau Wood, Guadalcanal, Okinawa, and the Chosin Reservoir.
