The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) announced what they are calling a “loyalty card” at a recent conference in Norfolk, Va., according to the Army Times. The card is expected to be available in the fall.

You can Adopt a Marine and his family while he is deployed in Afghanistan.
The 5th Marine Regiment Headquarters Company will be deployed in August 2011 for a year-long deployment at the tip of the spear in Afghanistan. That’s a long time to be away from family and the comforts of home.
With this in mind, The Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group has created a program called “Operation Joining Forces” where the Citizens of Dana Point and the surrounding communities can adopt a single Marine or a Marine and his family while in Afghanistan.

Valdez, a squad leader for 81 mm Mortar Platoon, Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, passes out Jolly Ranchers to Afghan children during Operation Kalawal Sunrise in the Village of Faiscal within Sangin, Afghanistan, June 1. “I had gone into one of the buildings before and the owner told me that he had been approached by fighters,” said Valdez, who planned the operation and led the Marines in its execution. “The local was told to move out of his compound because the enemy was going to use the abandoned compounds to ambush Marines and lay improvised explosive devices.” Valdez graduated from West Roxbury High School in 2003 and enlisted in the Marine Corps the following year. Valdez, 26, was born in the Dominican Republic and was raised in Boston.

VA Announces $92 Million in Construction Contract for Bay Pines

New Mental Health Facility to Expand Care

WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced the award of a $92 million contract to construct a new mental health facility at the VA medical center at Bay Pines, Fla., to expand care and services for Florida’s Veterans.
“A top priority for VA is providing greater access to VA’s health care system and the highest quality care for our nation’s Veterans,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “This new facility will help VA better serve Florida Veterans while also investing in the local economy. America’s Veterans have kept their promises to our Nation and they have earned the very best this nation has to offer.”

The contract provides $91.9 million to Archer Western/Demaria JV II, of Chicago. The contract calls for construction of a multi-story 156,000 square-foot addition to the main hospital building at Bay Pines. It will be a mixed facility that provides residential rehabilitation, acute inpatient mental health services and outpatient mental health services.

In 2010, the outpatient mental health programs that will be located in the new mental health building had nearly 150,000 visits (an 18 percent increase over the previous year).

It is estimated there will be 211,784 annual visits by 2029 (42 percent patient increase from 2009). The mental health building will also allow the facility to increase the number of inpatient acute psychiatric beds from 33 to 40. In 2010, the facility averaged 125 mental health admissions per month.

VA selected Bay Pines VA Healthcare System as the 2010 recipient of the Robert W. Carey Circle of Excellence Award, the department’s top honor for quality achievement.

Last year, VA spent more than $8 billion in Florida on behalf of the state’s 1.7 million Veterans. VA operates eight major medical centers in the state, more than 40 outpatient clinics, 24 Vet Centers and seven national cemeteries.

Paxton Jr. The ceremony also included the laying of wreathes, poetry readings, and performances by the French Army Band, the 'Commandant's Own' Drum and Bugle Corps, and the U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon.

1/4 'China Marines' Welcome New Commander

May 19. 2011. In a change of command ceremony at Camp Horno, Camp Pendleton, Lt. Col. Kevin Norton relieved Lt. Col. Joseph R. Clearfield as the commanding officer of 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment.

Clearfield has commanded 1/4 since 2009, and will be moving to the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C.

Norton enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1990 and became an artilleryman with 1/12. He was comissioned as a second lieutenant in 1993 though the Marine Corps enlisted commissioning program.

Norton's previous assignments include rifle platoon commander, heavy machine gun platoon commander, and company executive officer. Norton's experience also includes tenure with 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Regiment, as a strategic planner for the plans and policy directorate in the United States Strategic Command, and as the commanding officer of recruiting in New Jersey. He served in Operation Desert Shield/Storm, Operation Joint Endeavor and Operation Iraqi Freedom I & II.

1st Marine Division Headquarters, May 20, 2011. Marines and Sailors gathered Friday in a ceremony honoring the Marines and Sailors killed in Afghanistan. Tribute was also paid to British and Georgian troops that fell under the Division's command.

The Afghanistan battle streamers were added, recognizing the division's service in Afghanistan, and the first time in Marine Corps history that the 1st Marine Division has deployed to Afghanistan. While serving in Operation Enduring Freedom, the division conducted seven major operations and 45 others, including historic battles in Marjah, Sangin, and Bahram Chah.

The Monument Committee made a trip to Elberton, GA April 4-5 to check on the process of our monument. We are very pleased to announce that the monument wings have been laser etched with each of the 88 Marines who fell in combat while serving with Echo 2/7. The Marine Corps Emblem was also etched. The MC emblem will be mounted at the top of the monument.

The reality of the monument is coming forth. Just being there while the names were being etched in the granite was sobering. The engraving team that handled the job was very moved by the fact that so many Marines gave there lives for their freedom. It seemed like it was an honor for them to have the job.

The next step in the process is to erect the monument at the MC Museum, Semper Fi Park. This should be completed by mid May. After viewing the quality etchings, the monument committee can sleep better.

CMC and SMMC Visit Marines and Sailors of 1/5

FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELARAM II, Nimroz province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan – General James F. Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps, addresses the Marines of Regimental Combat Team 8 during his visit to Delaram May 12. The commandant’s tour of the RCT-8 Area of Operations included visits to the Marines serving in Sangin, Musa Qala, and Gereshk. Amos spoke to the Marines about their importance to the war efforts and issues concerning the Marines. “After 10 years of doing counterinsurgency operations here in Afghanistan, the Marine Corps knows what they’re doing,” said Amos. “You have every reason to be proud to wear this uniform.”

Sergeant Major Carlton Kent, Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, addresses the Marines of Regimental Combat Team 8 during his visit to Delaram May 12. The SMMC stressed the importance of Marine non-commissioned officers and the important role they are playing. Corporal Christopher Paulson, the legal clerk for Regimental Combat Team 8, took these words to heart “Small unit leadership is just as important today as it has been since the founding of the Corps,” said Paulson. “The fact that our NCOs are teaching our junior Marines how to be good NCOs so our Marine Corps can continue to build and we can press forward was an important point for all the Marines to hear.”

Armed Forces Day "Operation Appreciation" for Marine Corps Camp Pendleton

On Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 21, 2011, the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce will bring the business community and area residents together to provide a day of recognition to the Marines and Sailors based on Marine Corps Base Camp Joseph H. Pendleton.

Date: May 21, 2011
Time: 11:00am-5:00pm
Location: Oceanside Pier Amphitheater

The beach will be loaded with military land and amphibious displays, including the LCAC, for people to explore and learn about. The EOD team will be on hand to demonstrate their latest equipment and answer questions.

All Active Duty Military and their dependents must bring an Active Duty Military ID Card to get unlimited rides, activities, and a free lunch.

This event is open to the public. Wristbands are available for purchase for children’s rides at $10 per person. Entertainment and military displays are free to everyone.

Recon Marine Awarded Navy Cross

On May 10, 2011 Gunnery Sgt. Brian M. Blonder was awarded the Navy Cross during a ceremony at the Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington, VA. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus presented the award and described Blonder as "one of the most selfless and disciplined Marines" he has ever met.

In a 2008 firefight in Shewan, Afghanistan, Blonder shot and killed an insurgent who was attempting to fire a rocket-propelled grenade at his Marines. The firefight lasted all day, with Taliban outnumbering the Marines approximately eight to one. At the end of the fight, over 50 Taliban were dead and the rest retreated, and the Marines took control of a crucial supply route through Shewan.

Hundreds of Marines, family members, and friends gathered Friday on a helicopter landing zone overlooking Camp Pendleton to honor the 25 fallen Marines of 3/5 "Darkhorse." Some of the over 200 wounded Marines from the battalion were brought in from hospitals across the country, some double and triple amputees; some with severe brain injuries.

Sgt. Maj. Juan Duff USMC (Ret) attended the ceremony, representing the 1st Marine Division Association, along with members of the Southern California Chapter.

1st MarDiv's Barrett to be 17th SgtMaj. of Marine Corps

Sgt. Maj. Michael Barrett, the current Sgt. Maj. of 1st MarDiv, has been selected to serve as the Commandant's senior enlisted advisor. Barrett recently returned from Afghanistan, where he served as the sergeant major of Regional Command Southwest and I MEF Fwd.

Barrett brings with his 30 year career extensive infantry and combat experience, serving as a scout sniper and platoon sergeant in the Gulf War and two combat tours in Iraq. Additionally, Barrett served as the company gunnery sergeant and Marine liaison to the US Secret Service Camp David, Presidential Retreat; a drill instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego; chief instructor at Scout Sniper School at Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA; and as the top enlisted Marine at Recruiting Station Cleveland.

"He's the best of the best," Amos said in an interview with the Marine Corps Times, "Sergeant Major Barrett, through his long and distinguished service to our nation, has demonstrated that he is particularly well-suited to serve as my senior enlisted advisor through the challenges ahead."

Sergeant Major Barrett’s personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal “V” in lieu of 2d award, Meritorious Service Medal in lieu of 2d award, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal “V” in lieu of 4th award, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal in lieu of 3d award, Combat Action in lieu of 2d award and the Presidential Service Badge.

3/5 H&S Company Returns from Afghanistan

CAMP PENDLETON, CA

Hundreds of friends and family welcomed the return of over 250 Marines and Sailors of 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines H&S Company on the evening of Monday, 11 April 2011.

The 3/5 "Darkhorse" Battalion began operations in the Sangin District of Afghanistan in October 2010, an area previously occupied by British troops. In January, LA Times writer Tony Perry reported that 3/5 pushed into areas that the British had not gone, where Taliban control was unchallenged, where opium crops used to fuel insurgency were grown, and bomb makers gathered to create explosives used in Sangin and neighboring Kandahar province.

3/5 experienced heavy casualties, especially in the beginning of the deployment as Taliban fighters repeatedly ambushed the Marines in hopes that they would retreat to their bases. This tactic may have proved effective with previous opponents, but 3/5 lived up to their motto: “Get Some” and actively engaged the Taliban in hundreds of offensive firefights while significantly expanded the security bubble outward from the Sangin district center. The Marines brought more troops, more artillery, more airstrikes, and more firepower to the region—giving the Taliban two choices: leave or fight and die.

Sangin, now dubbed “the Fallujah of Afghanistan,” has become a battleground in which Marines are fulfilling the battalion’s legacy earned at Belleau Wood, Guadalcanal, Okinawa, and the Chosin Reservoir. Marine Commandant Gen. James F. Amos describes the Marines of 3/5 as “a story of heroism, of courage, of fidelity.”

According to Maj. Gen. Richard Mills, who just turned over command of NATO Regional Command Southwest, “They’re the greatest generation we’ve ever raised. They’re volunteers, they know the threat; they don’t have to be here. Ninety-nine percent of their friends don’t come over here; and yet, they have the courage to take the step forward and do the job that has to be done. I stand in awe of them.”

The Regiment is standing by to receive the rest of the Battalion in a short time to come. Welcome home, Darkhorse. Job Well Done.

Gen John A Toolan assumes Command of Regional Command Southwest from Maj Gen Richard P Mills

CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan

Gen. John A. Toolan, commanding general of II Marine Expeditionary Force (Fwd) assumed command of Regional Command Southwest in a ceremony on March 26 2011. Toolan assumed responsibility for operations in Helmand and Nimroz provinces from General Richard P. Mills.

Mills was the first U.S. Marine to lead a NATO regional command in combat, and successfully commanded RC Southwest, which oversees International Security Assistance Forces in Southwestern Afghanistan.

The 2011 1st Marine Division Association Reunion will be held at the beautiful Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington, VA on August 15-21 2011.

5th Marines Change of Command Ceremony

On 31 March, 2011 the 5th Marine Regiment and supporters celebrated a long-standing military tradition as 5th Marines said goodbye to Col Willy Buhl and welcomed Col Roger Turner back to the Regiment. Col Turner has served the Fighting Fifth with 2/5, 3/5 and Headquarters in tours past. Col Buhl will be heading to New York to work at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Juan Duff and Marty Vasquez attended the ceremony, representing the 1st Marine Division Association.

Command of 1st MARDIV Changes Hands

In a change-of-command ceremony outside of 1stMARDIV headquarters, Maj. Gen. Mike Regner assumed command from Maj. Gen. Richard Mills, who is serving as commander of I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) and Regional Command-Southwest in Afghanistan.

The Marine Corps Times reports:

Regner has been serving in Afghanistan as International Security Assistance Force-Joint Command’s deputy chief of staff for joint operations. His command tours include the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Pendleton and 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Other notable assignments include legislative assistant to the commandant and operations officer with I MEF in Iraq.”

General Mills took command of the Division in May 2007, deployed to Iraq in October to serve as both the assistant division commander and as commander of ground combat forces with Multinational Forces-West in Anbar province.

He returned to Camp Pendleton in January 2009 and served as assistant division commander before resuming command of the division in July 2009.
